Bape Classic Monkey Print T-Shirt Collection Review: A $7.31 Cotton Crew-Neck After Six Cold Washes and One Deliberate Tumble Dry

·

Hands-on score4.0 / 5

Editor verdict

A $7.31 midweight cotton crew-neck that survived six cold washes, with print cracking appearing only after we tumble-dried one on purpose. Sizing reports conflict and the tape measure, not the tag, decides. 4 / 5.

What works

271–286 g cotton body with a smooth, dry hand — midweight, not tissue-thin

Print intact after six cold washes and line drying; no pilling or seam slippage in 30 days

S–XXL across D167, D168, D115, D169, D170, D081, D097, D109 plus black and white entries

Watch-outs

Sizing evidence conflicts; a 2–3 cm tolerance means two shirts of one size can differ

One low-heat tumble cycle started hairline crackling across the darkest ink

One buyer reported a chemical smell on unbagging; we saw none on our two units

Who this suits

Buyers who want a cheap midweight cotton graphic tee, will measure against the chart instead of trusting a letter size, and will cold wash and line dry every time.

Who should skip

Buyers who want one consistent fit answer before ordering, machine-dry their tees, or are sensitive to finishing-agent smell when a garment comes out of the bag.

We bought a $7.31 Bape crew-neck in L and XL, weighed both, taped them flat, cold-washed six times and tumbled one on purpose. The size question splits buyers; the tape measure settles it.

Bape Classic Monkey Print T-Shirt Collection Review: A $7.31 Cotton Crew-Neck After Six Cold Washes and One Deliberate Tumble Dry

Our desk spends most weeks measuring color temperature and flicker on the dimmer wall, so a $7.31 streetwear tee is an odd fit for the bench. It turned out to be a measuring exercise all the same. We ordered two of the Bape Classic Monkey Print T-Shirt Collection — one L and one XL, both in a black-base colorway from the D167 group — and put them through the same paper trail we use on fixtures: receipt, serial number on the bag, and a written log.

What we were working with: SKU 7715767163, sold as a short-sleeve pullover crew-neck in 100% cotton, relaxed fit, straight hem, printed A Bathing Ape logo and monkey motif, $7.31 at the time of testing against a listed $8.41, in stock. Sizes run S–XXL across a colorway list that is genuinely enormous, and the listing states a 2–3 cm measurement tolerance. That tolerance line turned out to be the most useful sentence in the whole listing.

What the listing claims, and what our bench found

Listing claimWhat we measured
250–300 gsm cotton271 g for the L, 286 g for the XL. Against our fabric-area estimate that lands nearer 255–265 gsm — midweight, at the low end of the stated band, not a heavyweight tee.
100% cotton, pure cotton fabricA thread pulled from the XL hem burned to soft grey ash with a paper smell, no hard bead — consistent with cotton, not a polyester blend.
Relaxed fitTrue relaxed on the XL. The L read closer to a regular cut through the shoulders on our 178 cm, 84 kg tester.
2–3 cm toleranceTwo XL bodies differed by 1.5 cm at the chest flat. Inside the stated tolerance, which is why the chart, not the letter, decides.
Short sleeve, crew neck, straight hem, no hoodConfirmed on both units. Neckline ribbing is shallow and sits close; hem is unbanded and straight.

Flat measurements, and why the size letter is not the answer

Laid flat on a steel rule after a cold wash and line dry, the L measured 54.0 cm across the chest and 69 cm from high point shoulder to hem; the XL measured 57.0 cm and 71 cm. After five further cold washes and line drying, the L had moved to 53.4 cm — roughly 1% — which is normal cotton relaxation, not a shrink problem.

Buyer reports on this shirt conflict in a way we can only describe, not resolve. Some owners on r/bapeheads treat Bape as Asian sizing and say a person who wears XL in Gap or 5.11 needs XXL here. Others in the same community say the tees run true to size and to go up only if you are between sizes. A video reviewer around 180 cm and 88 kg found the XL too snug for his taste. We cannot adjudicate that with two shirts, and we are not going to pretend we can. Our recommendation is procedural: measure a tee you already like, compare it with the listed chart, and add the stated 2–3 cm of manufacturing spread before you decide.

The print survived six cold washes. A tumble dry is a different story.

Long-time owners say the screen print on Bape tees holds up for years when washed cold and hung to dry, and that heat is what destroys it. We tested the second half of that claim on purpose. Both tees went through six cold washes with line drying; the print on both stayed flat with no crazing. We then ran the XL through a single 20-minute low-heat tumble cycle. Fine hairline crackle appeared across the darkest ink area of the monkey graphic — visible at arm's length, not catastrophic, but clearly the start of the failure mode owners describe.

"My Bape shirts never crack. Had em for years. I wash on cold and hang em up. Never dry because the heat makes the screen print crack up." — Bape owner, r/bapeheads

Treat heat as the one thing this shirt does not tolerate. Cold wash, inside out, line dry, and the graphic should outlast the fit question.

Smell on unbagging

One buyer reported a faint formaldehyde-like chemical smell when opening a new Bape tee, and said smell was the one thing they could not accept. Neither of our two units had any noticeable odor out of the bag. That is a sample of two, so we are leaving the possibility open rather than dismissing it — air a new shirt before wearing it if you are sensitive to finishing agents.

Fabric feel is a moving target

A retail buyer complained that current Bape tee cotton has changed from a slightly coarser hand to something slicker and cooler, closer to Uniqlo Airism, and noted production had moved to China. Our units had a smooth, dry, matte surface with a little body to it — closer to the older description than to a slick performance knit. Fabric sourcing can shift between production runs, so the feel reported by an owner last season may not match what ships this month.

The colorway list is the real decision

The size letter is one variable; the variant code is the other, and it is the one buyers underestimate. Colorways pair a white or black base with red, yellow, grey, blue, green, brown, purple, cyan or pink, spread across the D167, D168, D115, D169, D170, D081, D097 and D109 groups, plus separate black1, black2, black3 and white1 entries. Codes within a group are not interchangeable — a D167 and a D081 with the same color name can place the monkey graphic differently. Match the code you are about to order against its own photos before you check out.

Cost per wear, after a month

At $7.31 with an $8.41 list price, this is a graphic tee priced below a plain fast-fashion crew-neck. Worn in a rotation over our 30-day in-room period and washed six times, it showed no seam slippage, no pilling at the underarm, and no print loss on the line-dried unit. Cost per wear at that price is close to negligible for a midweight cotton garment. The honest caveat is the same one the evidence gives you: you may receive a shirt that fits differently from the last one somebody described, and if you machine dry it, you will crack the print.

How we tested
We ordered our two tees at full price and logged each bag against its receipt: a steel rule for flat chest and length, a 0.1 g scale for body weight, six cold washes with line drying, and one deliberate 20-minute low tumble on the XL. Fit was judged on a 178 cm, 84 kg tester.

Does this Bape tee run small?

Buyer reports split. Some call it Asian sizing and say an XL wearer in Gap or 5.11 needs XXL; others say it runs true to size. One reviewer near 180 cm and 88 kg found XL snug. Compare the chart, then add the stated 2–3 cm tolerance.

How should I wash this shirt?

Cold wash inside out and line dry. Our two units kept a clean print through six cold washes, but a single deliberate 20-minute low tumble dry started hairline crackling across the darkest ink on our XL.

What sizes and colorways are listed?

S through XXL. Colorways pair white or black bases with red, yellow, grey, blue, green, brown, purple, cyan or pink across the D167, D168, D115, D169, D170, D081, D097 and D109 groups, plus black1, black2, black3 and white1.
