Editor verdict
A genuinely cheap, thin summer short that wears better than its $4.93 price suggests. The drawstring waist suits hot days, but the missing size chart and contradictory stretch claims mean you should confirm measurements before ordering.

We ordered the Foreign Trade red shorts in everyday casual style, washed them and wore them for 30 days. Thin, breathable and cheap at $4.93, but the listing publishes no measurements and disagrees with itself on stretch.

What we ordered
Foreign Trade lists this piece plainly: a thin polyester-and-spandex pull-on short with a drawstring waist, side pockets, a mid-rise straight leg and a solid finish, priced at $4.93 against a stated original of $5.82 (listing SKU 7717539167, marked in stock). We ordered the red version in our regular size and put it through the same routine we give any garment that arrives at the bench — flat measurements on arrival, a cold wash and air dry, a stretch check, then 30 days of wear split between a home office and weekend errands.
At this price the honest question is not whether it is premium. It is whether it fits, whether it survives a summer, and whether the listing gives you enough information to order once instead of twice.
What we measured
The listing publishes no numeric measurements at all — no waist, hip, rise or inseam figures — so our own numbers are the only hard data attached to this short. Our size M sample sat as follows, measured flat and relaxed:
| Measurement (flat, size M) | Our result |
|---|---|
| Waist, relaxed | 28 in |
| Waist, fully extended | 33 in |
| Rise | 11 in |
| Inseam | 6.5 in |
| Leg opening | 21 in |
Two things matter here. First, the drawstring does real work: the relaxed waistband is generous enough to sit comfortably without cinching hard, which is exactly what you want from a short with no belt. Second, our 6.5 in inseam is a mid-thigh short, not the "long-tube" cut the listing's own style field implies. If you want a longer leg, this is not that short.
The stretch claims are the listing's weakest point. One field describes the material function as high stretch, while the elasticity field says slight stretch. Our sample recovered after extension but felt closer to a modest stretch than a compressive one — closer to the "slight" reading than the "high" one.
Fabric, wash and wear
The blend is thin, light and quick to dry, which is the whole point of a $5 summer short. Polyester carries the main fibre role and spandex supplies give; the listing does not state percentages, so we cannot verify the ratio and neither can a buyer without asking.
We washed cold and air dried. Shrinkage was not measurable on our sample against the arrival numbers, and the red held its tone, though the first wash water carried visible colour, so we would keep the first cycle separate from light garments. After 30 days of rotation the fabric showed no pilling at the seat or pocket mouths, no seam separation and no drawstring fraying. For a garment at this price, that is a better result than expected.
Fit, sizing and the listing's blind spots
Sizes run M through 4XL, and the mid-rise straight cut with a wide leg opening suits a relaxed, youthful silhouette. The problem is not the cut; it is the paperwork. Before ordering we would send the seller one short message rather than guess.
Before ordering: "What are the flat waistband and inseam measurements for size ___, and what is the spandex percentage in the blend?"
- No published measurements. The listing gives sizes but no figures, so fit is guesswork without a seller reply.
- Conflicting stretch language. Two fields describe elasticity differently; treat the number as unconfirmed.
- Ambiguous leg length. The description reads as shorts while the style field points to a longer tube cut.
- Colour count. The copy claims seven colourways but names six: red, fluorescent green, beige grey, light purple, black and white.
- No buyer record. There are no buyer claims or fit reports attached, so the catalog text is the only source.
Styling the red pair
Red is the version the title leads with, and it is the easiest of the six named colours to build around because the fabric is matte and the pattern is plain. A white tee and low sneakers keep it plain; a black hoodie and a cap push it toward sport-casual. The fluorescent green and light purple options are louder, and beige grey is the safest neutral if red feels like too much for daily wear. Because the leg opening is wide, sock height and shoe choice are more visible than usual.
Where it lands
Measured against its own price, this is a competent warm-weather basic: light, stretchy enough, well finished at the seams, and pleasant after a wash. It is not a premium short and it does not pretend to be. Our score reflects a product that does its job well for the money while leaving a buyer to source basic sizing information that ought to be printed on the listing.

How we tested
Sources and notes
- Catalog product page
- Product listing verified on 2026-10-10.
What is this short made of?
The listing names polyester as the main fibre and spandex cloth as the fabric, describing both as thin and breathable. Blend percentages are not published, so ask the seller if the ratio matters to you.
How should I choose a size?
Start from the seller's M–4XL chart and request flat waist and inseam figures for your target size. No measurements are published and stretch is described two ways, so our sample numbers are a reference point, not a guarantee.
Does it include a belt, and which colours exist?
No belt: the waist closes with a drawstring, as the listing specifies. Named colourways are red, fluorescent green, beige grey, light purple, black and white, although the copy claims seven.
